Objective:
At
the end of this assignment, the participant will be able to:
--Use the World Wide Web to access
servers in the United States and at least one foreign country.
--Locate the
difference(s) between the World Wide Web and the Internet.
--Locate the
difference(s) between a search engine and a meta search engine.
--Use Boolean
search techniques when executing a search in a search engine or meta
search engine.
Challenge # 1: Internet
vs. WWW
Using the World
Wide Web, make a visit to the Louvre in Paris and go see a work of art
in the "Famous Painting" exhibit--this exhibit is located
on the second floor. Use http://www.smartweb.fr/louvre/b/index1.htm
to access the site.
ToDo 1) Click on any room in the second floor and describe/record
the following information in a microsoft word document:
*What is the name of the painting?
*What is the name of the painter?
*What year/century was the painting painted?
*Briefly describe the painting--what do you see?
2) Find a painting or sculpture from each floor and record the area
of origin. You have four different parts to do here (four different
floors). . .give me the name of the painting or sculpture and where
it originated from.
Challenge # 2: Search Engine vs.
Meta Search Engine
The Gutenberg Project
is dedicated to preserving books (Whole Books!/Actual Text) online for
study and universal access. Use the World Wide Web to access http://www.gutenberg.net/nl/9905.html
to gain access to the project listings.
ToDo:--List five books available online (access the above link
and click index to see a list of available books).
--Find two other sources where online books are available. Provide a
brief description of the types of books available and provide the web
address where you can find these books. Try this search engine--http://www.snap.com/--search for etext.
--Describe three benefits of having books online.
--Define what etext is.
Challenge # 3: Advanced Search Techniques
Use
the Liftoff to Space Exploration Web Server to find how to become an
astronaut. Start at http://liftoff.msfc.nasa.gov.
This assignment will take some time. . .search the listings in this
site to find the following information:
ToDo--Locate three things you can do in order to be better qualified
to become an astronaut (access the above link, click on human journey,
click on index, and find the information regarding how to
become and astronaut).
--Explain the different types of astronaut duties (access the above
link, and click on Nasa Kids--from here you will need to search
diligently to be able to find the different astronaut assignments).
Complete this challenge (find the answer to the following question):
--Where does the sky end and space begin?
Challenge # 4: At the House of Representatives
- copy and paste the directions
into your MS Word document
Use the World Wide Web to visit the House of Representatives to see what
currently is happening in Washington, DC. Start with http://thomas.loc.gov.
Select the menus: "House Directories," "Senate
Directories," and "Most Recent Issue" to answer
the following questions:
ToDo--Discover one issue that is new in the House of Representatives.
--Find out who your Congressmen and Congresswomen are (remember, the
congress is made up of the House of Representatives and the Senate.
Maine has two senators and two representatives).
For this assignment, it is acceptable to refer to your citation
in the following manner: The above information was obtained from
http://thomas.loc.gov
Challenge # 5: Russian Current Events
- copy and paste the directions
into your MS Word document
Use
the World Wide Web to view a Russian newspaper, "St. Petersburg
Times," to find out what is happening in Russia. Go to The St. Petersburg Times."
ToDo--Locate and summarize a current article in the newspaper.
--Locate an article in a U.S. newspaper about the same event--go
to the New York Times
>>Challenge...find and article about the same piece of information
in a Maine Newspaper.
For this assignment, you must cite your sources using the
ELECTRONIC FILE ON WWW:
format.
Challenge # 6: Weather
- copy and paste the directions
into your MS Word document
Take a view above the earth to see images from a satellite. See how the
different images help to predict what the weather will be. Use the World
Wide Web address http://www.cnn.com/WEATHER/images.html.
ToDo--Locate and compare the satellite views--use a view with QuickTime
translation. Try to predict what tomorrow's weather will be like in
the area of the country where we live.
--Compare your prediction with the actual forecast from the National
Weather Service at http://www.princeton.edu/Webweather/ww.html.
